Small Gods, a poem

Small Gods

The gods no longer believe
in themselves; one after another
they reached for the infinite
and came away empty handed.

Let others make their claims,
they said. Let others seek
omnipotence in dark
corners of existence.

We shall become the small gods
that sleep in forest and field.
We shall not question the stars
but only dance our moment

in their light before
they too stop believing.
